The Czech Ministry of Education has announced that schools will be reopening come September 1, but for some families living in the Czech Republic, fear of the virus isn’t the only challenge the rapidly approaching school year brings.

A new project aims to alleviate some of the financial burden that accompanies the return to school, via a one-time “free shop” that will take place in Prague’s Holešovice district later this month.

The initiative was organized by FAMU student Hannah Saleh as part of her graduate bachelor’s thesis.

“We will collect school supplies, new and second-hand because we also want children to think about sustainable consumption,” Saleh told the Czech website A2larm. She believes that her school free shop will be a pilot event.

For anyone with kids in Czech schools, expenses can be significant and often include a range of school supplies, different sets of all-weather clothes, slippers, musical instruments, and notebooks.

According to a recent survey, 24 percent of Czechs said they were willing to borrow money to cover expenses associated with the beginning of the school year.

Saleh would like to create a manual that helps people organize similar events in the future. She says that the inaugural free shop will be focused on single mothers, who particularly struggle this time of year.

The event will take place on August 19-23 in Holešovice, however, it will not be open to the general public. Saleh will post invitations via social platforms that support socially disadvantaged groups.

The program will also include workshops focused on creating new supplies from recycled ones.

Saleh is currently seeking volunteers and donations of school supplies. “If someone would like to volunteer or has the opportunity to donate a larger number of things, such as a company or organization, they can contact us through our Facebook page,” Saleh told the server.

Collections are currently taking place through August 17 across Prague at two branches of the Transfer Station charity shop (Opatovická 7, Prague 1 and Chelčického 17, Prague 3), in the creative space Vzletná (Milady Horákové 56, Prague 7) and in the café of the Hybernská Campus (Hybernská 4, Prague 1).

Information about the event can be requested from the Klub matek samoživitelek (Club for single mothers).
