The 2015 Czech children’s book This Is Prague picked up accolades at the World Festival of Children’s Literature at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair earlier this week.
Released last year by Czech publisher Baobab, the colorful tome was awarded an Honorable Mention among hundreds of entries from around the world. Author Olga Černá and illustrator Michaela Kukovičová, were on hand to receive the award at last Monday’s ceremony.
Published in Czech and English editions, This Is Prague is a whimsically illustrated primer to the Czech capital introducing its well-known sites, lesser-known corners (Libeňský Island, Zizkov Tower), and important figures and moments in its history (Sir Winton, the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.)
The book is part of a series by Czech emigre painter and illustrator Miroslav Šašek whose illustrated city guides (This Is New York, This Is Paris, This Is Rome) saw worldwide acclaim in the 1960s.
Baobab recently revived the series, adding This Is Prague to its catalogue of visually-driven titles for adults and children. A Berlin edition is currently in the works.
The book can be purchased at most Prague bookstores, including the Baobab flagship bookstore in Vršovice.
