Loud Summer Lovemaking Complaints Heat Up Letná

High temps and open windows have led to some boisterous activities – and unhappy neighbors – in several Prague districts

Noise violation laws have evolved to become somewhat more defined in Prague in recent years, though like many of the ordinances intended to bring order to the Czech capital, they are not always consistently enforced.

A new trend in neighborhood noise disturbance is making the rounds of social networks lately with reports of loud summertime love-making sessions coming in from Letná, Žižkov, and Libeň.

The Facebook page Letenská parta posted this photo of a notice which appeared on the door of an apartment building in Prague 7 a few days ago, igniting a passionate debate about one’s right to orgasm loudly in Prague.

The sign reads: “We ask the woman who is screaming throughout the entire courtyard during intercourse to be quiet! There are kids and neighbors. Close the window!”

A number of commenters called out the author of the note for overreacting, suggesting to those who would be bothered by the bedroom sounds to buy earplugs, close the windows, or move to a building without a courtyard.

Not everyone was so permissive. One exasperated woman posted:

Clearly you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting such a queen of coitus. We deal with the loud speeches of one such a few times a day…if the roar were to be located, then I would have already asked [her] to close a window or shut the hell up.”

The woman in question came forward on the post, admitting proudly that  “Yes I scream in pleasure…and it is natural.”

Elsewhere in Prague, a Libeň tenant wrote about a similar incident in his neighborhood, going so far as to record the steamy session in which neighbors can be heard applauding and whistling in the background.

Czech daily Metro.cz is reporting that inhabitants of Žižkov have also been experiencing the phenomenon of late; thanks to the heat and open windows, similar signs have begun popping up.

Police spokeswoman Irena Seifertová says that a number of complaints about neighbors having loud sex have come in through the years, including one man who said that his female neighbor “Is having sex the whole night, screaming so much and probably because her man cannot make her…”

What Does the Law Say?

Should you find yourself on either side of this situation note that loud love making, if it takes place at night, can be defined as disruptive according to local laws which officially designate the hours between 10pm and 6am as the period of “night quiet” (noční klid in Czech).

The permitted noise level during this time period is limited to 30 dB, the equivalent of a whisper about 3 feet away.

If you plan to go beyond 30-decibel fever pitch on a regular basis, note that constant noise disturbance can be reported to your regional hygiene station (krajská hygienická stanice) who can conduct a (gulp) noise reading and issue fines!
