New English-friendly Broadway tribute show coming to Prague

Sing along to the Tony-award-winning hits at a new concert experience coming to the Czech capital this spring

While Prague has a lively musical theater scene, with the Karlin Musical Theater among its most popular venues for catching classics like Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida, and West Side Story, for lovers of Broadway showstoppers sung in the original English language, the pickings can be slim.

Come this spring, however, a new concert show invites fans of everything from the Lion King to Les Mis to “hear the people sing”. Called “Today on Broadway” the evening will be presented by the same production company that brought The Greatest Show to the Hybernia Theatre stage, harnessing local star power to perform the songs from the 2017 film of the same name.

“Today on Broadway” will premiere at Prague’s Vinohrady Theater on March 29. During one concert evening, the melodies from some of the world’s most popular musicals will be interpreted by Czech performers.

According to organizers, selections from Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Tarzan, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast are on the program, as well as songs from Dear Evan Hansen by Pasek & Paul, the current number one show on Broadway in New York and London’s West End.

Czech singers Andrea Holá, Iva Marešová, Martin Šemík, Filip Antonio, and Michal Skořepa are all due to appear. More names will be announced soon. All of the songs, many of them Grammy and Tony Award winners, will be performed in their original English versions accompanied by Tokhi & The Groove Army drum group.

Director Jiří Peter says of the new project: “The idea of ‘Today on Broadway’ was originally conceived by my desire to honor the most iconic musical theater songs of all time through my own production and interpretation.”

He adds, “I started talking to my colleagues about it, and we assembled a remarkable group of people with a shared passion, to pay tribute to the musicals themselves, and to say thank you for the unique influence and joy they brought to all of our lives.”

Tickets for the March 29, 8 pm show are now on sale via Ticketmaster and the Vinohrady Theater box office. For more information about “Today on Broadway” visit www.jiripeter.com
