Culture space Kasárna Karlín recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. The former military barracks continues to host concerts and summer cinema and will now introduce the one thing that Prague is truly missing (depending on who you ask) later this month: a public rollerskating rink.
For one night in July, Kasárna Karlín, in partnership with Prague City Roller Derby, will be transformed into a roller disco, complete with skate rentals and funky music to lend to the retro atmosphere. The rink has a capacity for about 200 people, according to organizers who say that interest in the event is already huge.
Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten how to glide, turn, or spin – Roller Dance Praha, a local group of skating enthusiasts will be on hand to give instruction; skate rentals are available in a range of sizes. Zegi Strdst + Tokio Sound Blaster will provide the soundtrack.
Speaking to the pastime’s, popularity in the Czech lands, Kasárna Karlín spokesperson Kamila told us:
“Roller skates were very popular in the 80s’ in Czechoslovakia, there are many legendary Czech roller skaters who are famous around the world for their pool skating.” She adds that the trend is now returning all over the world largely in part to nostalgia:
“For many people, roller skating was part of their childhood. They put the skates on to remind themselves of these carefree times. Also, let’s not forget: you simply look cool on roller skates and you’ll get an enjoyable workout as well.”
There are a couple of things to consider, however, before letting the good times roll.
While the bar will be open all skaters will be asked to sign a waiver agreeing to imbibe at their own risk. The number of rental skates is limited and expected to go fast so organizers suggest bringing your own gear. (In the center, Honzovy Longboardy has a good selection; for 70s-style costumes check out Kuzmart which also has pre-sale of tickets.)
Sadly, the rink will be open for just one night, but Kamila says they are considering repeat events.
“We have gotten so much positive feedback that we are eager to make it a regular event. Hopefully, people will enjoy the party, as much as we enjoy organizing it.”
The venue also hosted a popular ice-skating rink this past winter season.
