Prague is shaking off cucumber season and moving fast into vinobraní interlude. From fashion to dance, to whisky and wine, September promises fresh things to experience all month long.
Bonobo, Divadlo Archa, Sept 21
British DJ Simon Green’s project Bonobo brings it experimental warmth and down-tempo beats, inspired in part by 60s French-film, to one of Prague’s most acoustically pleasing venues.
Strings of Autumn, Sept 23-Nov 9
The highly-acclaimed annual jazz and classical festival kicks off a month-long series of concerts with Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan accompanied by the Prague Philharmonic, followed by English violinist Daniel Hope on September 29.
Radůza, Divadlo Dobeška, Sept 26
The bluesy tunes of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and Czech chanteuse Radůza derive their influence from chanson and the best of the Czech folk and country tradition.
Film, theater, art
Prague Biennale 6, through September 15
Only a few weeks left to see the sprawling display at the Žižkov train station. Focusing on the artistic tendencies of Central Europe, key sections to check out include Expanded Painting and Flow, dedicated to contemporary art.
Viktor Kolář Retrospective, through September 29
Czech photographer Viktor Kolář at the City of Prague Gallery’s House at the Stone Bell. Dating back to 1959, his photos are of everyday life in both the Czech Republic and Canada – streets and people interacting.
Beijing-Prague, through September 29
A new look at contemporary Chinese art is being presented for one month only at the Imperial Stables at Prague Castle. This traveling exhibition introduces the work of 40 contemporary Chinese artists.
Dylan Moran, Lucerna, Sept 30
See the funny man and Irish star of Britain’s popular Black’s Books series at work in person as he takes to the stage at Lucerna Velky Sal. Side-splitting, super dry-wit awaits.
Grand Prix Praha, September 7
Limber up and go for a leisurely night run through the streets of Prague. The 10 kilometer race starts and ends in Wenceslas Square, and there will be music along the way to keep you going.
Prague Fashion Week, September 9-15
The fall season’s first fashion event features nearly all of the best Czech designers and brands, and includes the introduction of the Dreft Black Card young fashion designer winner for 2013, Lukáš Macháček.
Museum Night, September 14
The wildly popular Museum Night, postponed in June due to the floods, has been rescheduled for September 14. Free entry and transport to nearly 40 institutions, many which put on special programs. Starts at 19:00.
Prague Open, September 14-15
This world dance sport competition takes place in Lucerna Hall and includes both Latin and standard dances by competitors from around the world.
Prague Fashion Weekend, September 18-22
Pařížská becomes the fashion hub of Prague this weekend for this Mercedes-Benz sponsored event. Around 40 Czech fashion designers and brands will showcase their newest creations.
Boat Party Prague, Every Friday & Saturday
Three decks hold 300 people for a 2-hour party cruise. You can start the evening with their pre-party and keep the action going with the after-party in Karlovy Lázně
Jiná vína, September 7
This festival of unusual and niche vintners will be held from 12:00-18:00 at the Modřany vineyard. The organizers’ goal is to feature smaller, often organic wine producers whose work rarely makes it into the shops.
Foodparade 2013, September 7-8
Located at the Troja Chateau, this food festival features Czech chefs serving up tasting bites of their specialties, as well as wine, beer, coffee, and more to nosh your way through an afternoon.
Vinobraní at Prague Castle, September 14-15
The eight edition of this wine festival features tastings of Bohemian and Moravian wines and some Moravian burčák will be on hand as well. Entry is free, but to taste you must buy a tasting glass for 60 CZK.
Whisky Live, September 20-21
If wine isn’t so much to your liking, check out Prague’s first Whisky Live festival. Held in the New Town Hall, the event offers the opportunity to taste and learn more about 160 different types of whiskies from around the world.
Divadlobraní, National Theatre, through September
Take advantage of the deep discount (40 percent off) offered by the National Theatre, for the entire month of September, on tickets to drama, opera, ballet, and Lanterna Magika peformances. Box office is open daily from 10:00-18:00.
LeMarket, September 21
A modern market featuring Czech and Slovak-made fashion, accessories, jewelry, and more. This free event is being held at the Fusion Hotel.
