10 Ways to Impress Your Girl

Unique ideas for celebrating Valentine's Day with your partner in Prague

Inject some romance back into your relationship this Valentine’s without resorting to the clichéd formula of flowers and chocolates. Expats.cz has put together some ideas for celebrating February 14th in the Bohemian capital in original fashion. That’s amore!

Do something daring: bungee jump or skydive in tandem

Flinging yourself off a bridge strapped to your fair lady might not be everyone’s idea of showing you care, but at least it shows imagination – plus getting your adrenaline pumping can do wonders for the libido. If you’d like to bungee with your beloved, Jiří Stolín’s Extreme Sports runs regular sessions near Chomotov. The various packages on offer include tandem jumps. Prague also has several indoor skydiving centres where you can experience the rush of freefall without risking life and limb by leaping out of a plane.

Impress her with your culinary prowess

There’s something soul-destroying about sitting in a restaurant on Valentines with rows and rows of other couples, all eating out just because the calendar says February 14th. Win your fair lady’s heart by cooking her up something tasty and then dining à deux chez toi. You don’t need a Michelin Star to serve up something impressive. Why not try your hand at grilling steak or whipping up a casserole? The Real Meat Society is a top-quality butcher’s shop where you’re guaranteed to find prime cuts.

Treat her to a massage (voucher)

Giving her a back rub is a nice idea, but if you’re not endowed with the magic touch then why not treat her to a professional massage instead? There’s no shortage of venues in Prague from Thai to Swedish to a sports rubdown. If you’re up for something a little more intimate and want to get some hands-on action yourself, why not book a Tantric massage for couples?

Music is the food of love

You don’t have to be a culture vulture to appreciate classical music. Book tickets for the Rudolfinum on Valentine’s and be serenaded by internationally renowned French cellist Jean-Guihen Queras in a gorgeous setting. If it’s opera that takes your fancy, The Elixir of Love is being performed on the feast of St. Valentine’s at the National Theatre. Czech and English surtitles are used so you’ll be able to follow the action without mastering Italian.

Do some staycationing

Prague is a popular tourist destination for newlyweds and established couples from across the globe, but it’s easy to forget its charms though once you settle into the daily grind of day-to-day life. Why not propose a Prague staycation and spend Valentine’s falling back in love with the city which once had you head over heels? Rediscovering the Golden City’s fairytale vistas arm in arm is guaranteed to melt the heart of the most hardened cynic. You’ll need to plan your route carefully, though, to avoid the tourist hordes. Set your alarm clock early and stroll across a deserted Charles Bridge: 07:00 should do it. Alternatively, avoid the centre altogether: head for Vyšehrad to enjoy a great view of the city while strolling together.

Hit the ice

There’s definitely something romantic about twirling around the ice in tandem. Ovocný trh’s free skating venue packs up at the end of January, but Prague has no shortage of indoor and outdoor rinks which are still running.  Take a look at our online guide to choose your location and don’t forget to check if your chosen venue hires out skates or whether you’re expected to provide your own.

Get loved-up on a mini-break

As Bridget Jones once proclaimed, a mini-break means real commitment. Show her you care by whisking her away for a weekend in the mountains. Many hotels are equipped with ‘wellness’ centres – in other words, swimming pools and saunas – where you can unwind after a day of tackling the slopes. You needn’t worry about being an expert, either: Czech resorts positively welcome rubbish skiers so it’s all refreshingly down-to-earth. If that all sounds a bit active, what about staying in a castle? Český Krumlov’s Hotel Růže has tons of Old-World charm.

Go to a beer spa

If the idea of going to a conventional spa might sound like too much of a threat to your masculinity, fear not: the lager-loving locale that is the Czech Republic offers real men the chance to bathe in beer. Apparently, it’s not just a gimmick: the hops help exfoliate the skin while the yeast is packed with B-vitamins and antioxidants. Book a session at Pivní Lázně BBB in Prague or head to Pilsen, home of world-famous Pilsner Urquell, to experience a dip in the amber nectar.

Let her eat cake

If your beloved deserves nothing less than sheer decadence, but your budget doesn’t stretch to investing in a necklace from Tiffany’s, take her out on a cake-eating mission. Fox and Deer is a cukrárna we’ve featured previously with the most devilishly rich chocolate sponge in town; Café Louvre’s faded pink fin-de-siecle decor is the perfect backdrop to a Valentines rendezvous – and they have a decent range of desserts too. Be sure to order two spoons.

Buy something together for the goody drawer

Thanks to Sex and the City, having a collection of sex toys in a drawer next to your bed is no longer taboo. You’ll no doubt have noticed the branches of Erotic City on every corner of town: make Valentine’s your excuse to go for a browse there with your better half. If your relationship doesn’t require the addition of any battery-operated items, you could suggest a trip to the Sex Machines Museum for some inspiration. Don’t be surprised, though, if this saucy proposition earns you a disdainful glare – or a slap in the face.
