Czechs vs. Czechs for Tennis Gold in Rio?

Czechs vs. Czechs for Tennis Gold in Rio?

Aug. 13 update: make that bronze, not gold. Both Czech pairs lost in the semis yesterday, and they’ll face off against each other at 18:30 today in the bronze medal game.

Earlier this week, Czech doubles team Lucie Šafářová & Barbora Strýcová handed Venus and Serena Williams their first-ever Olympics loss.

Two matches later, they’re still in the hunt for the gold. And they might have to go through their fellow countrywomen to get it.

The Czech Republic was guaranteed a medal yesterday when women’s doubles teams Šafářová & Strýcová and Lucie Hradecká & Andrea Hlaváčková both advanced to the semifinals.

At 17:00 Prague time today, Šafářová & Strýcová will match up against Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova & Elena Vesnina.

Later at 21:30, Hradecká & Hlaváčková will take on Switzerland’s Martina Hingis & Timea Bacsinszky.

The two losing teams will face each other in the bronze medal game tomorrow, while the winners will compete for gold in the final match on Sunday.

Should both Czech teams advance, they’ll face off in a rare Czech vs. Czech final, and the country will be guaranteed both gold and silver medals either way.

In other tennis action, star Petra Kvitová will face Puerto Rico’s Mónica Puig at 17:00 today in semifinal singles action in her own hunt for gold.
