Prague Food Festival canceled this year: Where to go instead

Prague's longest running festival will not place this year, organizers have announced

The food festival season in Prague typically kicks off in spring with a number of citywide events inviting gastronomes to sample the Czech capital’s tastiest culinary offerings in picnic-like settings.

There’s one conspicuous absence from the circuit this year: Prague Food Festival. Prague’s longest-running food fest, originally taking place on the lawns of Prague Castle but moving to Vyšehrad in recent years, is sitting this season out.

“We announce to you this year XIII. the PRAGUE FOOD FESTIVAL will not take place because we are preparing a new – completely original – [project into which we are putting] all our strength and enthusiasm!” the festival wrote on its website and Facebook page.

It goes on to say that “[Fans] have something to look forward to, so watch the official Facebook page of Maurer’s Grand Restaurant where you can learn about everything first.”

The festival, typically taking place the last week of May, was often criticized for its high entrance fees and “Grands” system and incompatibility with the rising preference for casual dining and street-food trends in Prague,

Luckily for local food lovers and festival goers, there are a number of picnic-style food events coming up to keep Instagram feeds colorful and the hunger for trends satisfied:

Vegan Picnic

May 19th
A friendly vegan potluck open to all lovers of food without animal products. Bring your own food and meet like-minded people.

Prague Picnic

Střelecký Island
June 13th
The third year of the two-day festival of street gastronomy on Střelecký Island will offer guests this year a selection of food stalls, rental of baskets and picnic equipment, workshops, competitions, and musical accompaniment.

Apetit piknik

Havlíčkovy sady
June 15th
The 9th annual culinary market and gastronomic festival in one, organized by the magazine Apetit, this year will once again take place in the beautiful environment of the park Grébovka in Vinohrady. Guests can also enjoy a wide variety of open-air meals and drinks.

Food Parade

Troja Chateau
August 31st – September 9th
Sample menus from dozens of restaurants, bistros, cafes, and pop-ups. In addition, there will be a large number of seating and picnic areas with loungers, where visitors can borrow picnic blankets.
