Did you know that Prague is the European Capital of Sport for 2016?
It’s a designation awarded to a European city with a population of more than 500,000 by ACES Europe “according to the principles of responsibility and ethics, being aware that sport is a factor of aggregation of the society, improvement in the quality of life, psycho-physical well-being and complete integration within social classes in the community.”
Exactly how or why the designation is awarded to a particular city in a given year is not explicitly detailed; Turin preceded Prague as the European Capital of sport in 2015, while Marseille, Sofia, Budapest, and Málaga will hold the distinction in forthcoming years.
During the first few months of 2016, Prague hasn’t done much to promote the distinction; in fact, the city might have been sportier in 2015 as host to the Ice Hockey World Championships and football’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Earlier this week, however, the Czech capital released an official music video from Czech band Portless featuring Henry D. that showcases the city through a variety of athletic actions.
Check My Sound features a number of sport activities around the city, but particularly the Letná Metronome area, long a favorite location for skaters, bikers, and other active types.
Here’s looking forward to more activity in Prague throughout 2106 as the city carries the title of European Capital of Sport through the rest of the year.
