Did you know that you can get a 50% discount at shops in Prague’s city center, just by speaking Czech?
That’s exactly what happened to Prague’s Honest Guide, who paid 150 crowns for a pack of cigarettes when speaking English – – and 95 crowns when returning in Czech.
Created by Honza Mikulka & Janek Rubeš, the Honest Guide YouTube channel has made a name for themselves by shining a light on some of the biggest scams and ripoffs that prey on tourists in central Prague.
In previous videos, the duo have exposed unscrupulous taxi drivers, fake money change street scams, and 0% commission exchange offices that shell out far less than advertised rates. Honest Guide’s popularity has not only warned tourists from these scams, but also resulted in one of the worst offenders – an exchange office on Old Town Square – getting shut down for good.
In their latest video, Prague’s Honest Guide discovers shops in central Prague that charge different prices for tourists and locals.
“My friend was just here and he spoke English, and you charged him more for the same cigarettes,” Rubeš tells one shop assistant.
“There’s a different price for tourists,” the vendor tells him.
“That violates some law, doesn’t it?”
Our thoughts exactly.
It wasn’t an isolated incident. Honest Guide approached multiple tourist shops and convenience stores in center Prague, and was repeatedly overcharged when speaking English.
Good advice for anyone when travelling in central Prague: be wary when purchasing any items from shops in tourist-trafficked areas.
